Quality of Life Information
Helping you understand and assess your pet's comfort, happiness, and overall well-being.
One of the most difficult decisions a pet owner faces is determining their companion's quality of life. This resource is designed to help you evaluate your pet's day-to-day experience and have informed conversations with our veterinary team.
The HHHHHMM Quality of Life Scale
Score each category from 1 (poor) to 10 (excellent). A total score above 35 out of 70 is generally considered acceptable quality of life.
Hurt
Is your pet's pain successfully managed? Can your pet breathe properly? Is oxygen supplementation necessary?
Hunger
Is your pet eating enough? Does hand feeding help? Does your pet need a feeding tube to maintain adequate nutrition?
Hydration
Is your pet properly hydrated? For pets not drinking enough, can subcutaneous fluids be given at home to help maintain hydration?
Hygiene
Can your pet be kept brushed and cleaned? Is the pet free of sores? Are oral hygiene needs being met?
Happiness
Does your pet express joy and interest? Is your pet responsive to family, toys, and favorite activities? Is your pet depressed, lonely, anxious, or afraid?
Mobility
Can your pet get up without assistance? Does the pet stumble or have seizures? Can the pet be taken outside or helped with mobility aids?
More Good Days Than Bad
When bad days outnumber good days, quality of life may be too compromised. When a healthy human-animal bond is no longer possible, the pet's suffering should not be prolonged.
