Periodontal disease at this stage is incurable. The chronic infection of the gum tissue had eroded the jawbone and eating may be difficult. Teeth may fall out or crack off at the gum line resulting in painful abscesses.

The bacterial infection of the mouth may have already caused damage to the heart, kidneys and liver. Eating is sometimes painful, and for some pets impossible.  Keep in mind that animals hide discomfort well.

A pet with a mouth in this condition requires prompt surgical attention to relieve the pain. Often, the infection of the gum tissue is so sever that the pet needs a course of antibiotics before treatment can begin.

Southtowns Animal Hospital sees dental emergencies like this by appointment. Call us so the doctors and veterinary assistants can evaluate your pet’s condition and stop his mouth from hurting.
